Achieving your career goals in 2016

As the New Year rolls in, the majority of people have already started their resolutions to try and better themselves in 2016. But as most people look to cut out alcohol, exercise more and eat less fatty foods, there are actually some simple resolutions that professionals here in London should be considering if they want to achieve their career goals, build confidence and gain leadership skills.

As an executive coach, I work with many businesses in London and the surrounding areas. I help ensure that business professionals further their careers through setting goals, have a positive outlook and remove stress and anxiety.

Here are some thoughts that professionals in London should be considering in 2016 to better their career:

Set career goals

Not many professionals tend to set their own career goals, that’s where executive coaching comes in, but it does actually work because it means you are committing yourself to a task. That means you are forcing yourself to say ‘Ok, I won’t be able to win this client over night, but what can I do to get the ball rolling?’ I suggest setting three goals that you think are achievable over the next 12 months to try and reach your ultimate objective. It is important that these goals are small and realistic, don’t begin to cause yourself additional stress trying to reach an unrealistic goal. And, if you need help, executive coaching through one-to-one or group coaching sessions in London businesses can really help distinguish what you want to achieve and how you can do it.

Interact outside of the office

Networking is extremely popular in the business world at the moment, particularly here in London. And although it may sometimes feel like a waste of time, it can actually be extremely beneficial. You may not get any new work into the office, but what it can do is massively improve your confidence and the ability to lead others. Believe it or not, at many of my executive coaching sessions I see a lot of leading members of staff that struggle with confidence. Such sessions can help professionals feel more comfortable in such situations and less stressed at work, as well as giving people the self-belief to sell their abilities and their companies. Push yourself a little bit further in 2016, and add networking to your to do list.

Pursue a new skill

The key to career and personal development is to keep learning and pushing yourself. I always recommend that London professionals actively keep pushing themselves to improve their personal and professional lives. Choose a skill that interests you and start to learn something new, you never know where it might come in useful!

All the above are just a few of the small steps you can take this year to reach career goals and push yourself further.
