Do you feel like it is time to move up the career ladder? If you feel you are ready to move on, and have the skills to do so, then maybe you just need a little push. We are not handed our achievements on a plate, and to really move up the career ladder we need to work hard and prove that we are deserving through our actions.
If you are ready to climb the career ladder, here are some tips I have picked up along the way through working with executive coaching clients, and my own career in business.
Get to know the person responsible for promotions
Get to know your boss, simply. Even if you don’t like them, you are not going to move forward without having a good relationship with the person who is responsible for giving you a promotion. Make yourself a likable employee, work hard, and keep them up to date with how you are getting on. If you have a good relationship with your boss then you are more likely to find it easier to speak to them about a promotion.
Keep a note of your achievements at work…
…And make sure your boss knows about them! If you want to move up the career ladder, there is no room for being shy. Take praise when it is deserved and if you are responsible for a success in the office, let your boss know. You don’t have to show off, simply email them a note explaining the success; your boss will be pleased and will remember that it was you who made it happen.
This tip is about offering yourself up to opportunities that are perhaps outside of your job description, or going the extra mile. If you get your job done well and on time, and have time to take on extra work, your boss is going to think you are pretty special.
Yes, be nice! People warm to colleagues who are helpful, caring and will admit to their own mistakes. Treat others as you wish to be treated and you will find that people will see you as a role model. Offer to help junior staff, and help out in group work.
If you stick to these tips you should find yourself ready for a promotion and climbing up the career ladder before you know it!
